Derivation of lung epithelium from bone marrow cells

Recent studies demonstrate the capacity of BM-derived cells to engraft as differentiated cells of a variety of organs, including lung. In this paper, we review the current state-of-the-art in this area. We also summarize our work demonstrating that cultured adherent marrow cells can serve as progenitors of lung alveolar epithelium.

      Nevertheless, preliminary studies indicate that use of growth factors linked to injectable scaffold systems that can target specific sites within the lung is feasible and may a represent a path for developing such treatments.58,61 Cell-based therapies for repairing and regrowing the emphysema lung are also being examined, although initial studies in animal models have been disappointing.62-70 Sources of reparative cells that have been considered for this purpose include endogenous bronchoalveolar stem cells, autologous bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells, and embryonic stem cells.
