Statistical methods

Survival rates were calculated by the Kaplan-Meier method and compared with the log-rank test. Multivariate analyses were performed by logistic regression, and weights were used to account for incomplete follow-up. The results of the multivariate analyses are reported as odds ratios (ORs) with a corresponding p value or 95% confidence limit. An OR > 1.0 indicates that the factor was associated with a higher probability of the event occurring; conversely, an OR < 1.0 means the factor was linked

Centers and activity

The number of centers reporting lung transplantations each year is shown in Figure 1. The number of centers that have reported lung transplantations to the Registry has declined almost 20% since 1996, from a peak of 128 centers to 104 centers in 2002. Nevertheless, after being relatively stable from 1995 to 1999, activity in lung transplantation increased steadily through 2002, and it has grown by 17% over the last 4 years (Figure 2). Since 1994, the annual number of single lung

Centers and activity

The number of centers that have reported heart-lung transplantations has decreased approximately 40% since 1994 from a maximum of 63 to 37 in 2002 (Figure 1). Concomitantly, the drop-off in annual activity that began in 1996 has continued, and only 71 heart-lung transplantations were recorded for 2002 (Figure 18). Only 4 centers reported an annual volume ≥5 heart-lung transplantations per year for the period January 1, 1998–June 30, 2003, and two-thirds of the transplantations were distributed
