    Furthermore, the commonly used tuberculin skin test (TST) frequently shows negative results among the malnourished group (Anderson et al., 2014; World Health Organization, 2013). Conventional culture using Lowenstein–Jensen (LJ) medium of gastric lavage or induced sputum specimens has a better diagnostic yield (20–40%) compared to microscopy, but takes 4–8 weeks for results (Berggren et al., 2004; Starke, 2003; Watterson and Drobniewski, 2000; Zar et al., 2005). Another culture method, the Mycobacterium Growth Indicator Tube (MGIT), has been shown in several studies to be a sensitive and quick technique for the rapid detection and isolation of Mycobacterium tuberculosis (MTB) and susceptibility testing, giving results within 2–27 days.
