2012, Medicina IntensivaEtiology of spontaneous pneumothorax in 105 HIV-infected patients without highly active antiretroviral therapy
2009, European Journal of RadiologyCitation Excerpt :In the series by Golpe et al., 30.7% of the SP observed were bilateral, although the number of patients included in the study was considerably lower than in the present study [39]. As in the majority of studies published, the most common aetiology of BSP in our series was PJP [22,23,38,40,41,42]. In summary, to our knowledge, our study is the largest series published on SP in HIV-infected patients, and show that the most common cause of SP in Spain are bacterial infection.

Fifty to 95% of HIV-related pneumothoraces are PCP-related1,2,6,7; hence, the majority of information regarding spontaneous pneumothorax in HIV is associated with PCP. Our review of the literature found reports of 13 patients who had concomitant PCP and CMV infections.2,13
