    • Serial Transthoracic Ultrasonography Studies in Hematopoietic Cell Transplant Patients: A Tool for Early Lung Pathology Detection

2023, Ultrasound in Medicine and Biology
      Citation Excerpt :

Pulmonary complications are a significant cause of morbidity and mortality in patients with hematologic malignancies, particularly in patients pursuing blood or marrow hematopoietic stem cell transplant (HCT) procedures (Maziarz et al. 2016). Historically, 20%–50% of hematological malignancy (HM) patients experience pulmonary complications and 40%–60% of adult patients experience pulmonary complications after HCT (Krowka et al. 1985; Loss et al. 1993; Maziarz et al. 2016). Early detection of pulmonary complications could result in earlier therapeutic interventions, thereby improving the patient's overall prognosis (Maziarz et al. 2016; Frinc et al. 2017a, 2017b).

2019, Biology of Blood and Marrow Transplantation
      Citation Excerpt :

Pulmonary complications are a significant cause of post-HCT complications and include infectious as well as noninfectious etiologies such as idiopathic pneumonia syndrome (IPS), diffuse alveolar hemorrhage (DAH), and chronic graft-versus-host disease (GVHD)/bronchiolitis obliterans syndrome. Historically, 40% to 60% of adult patients experience pulmonary complications after HCT, and 30% of post-HCT deaths are attributed to pulmonary causes [9,10]. There are few data on the incidence and outcomes of pulmonary complications in pediatric patients, however.

2019, Biology of Blood and Marrow Transplantation
      Citation Excerpt :

Pulmonary complications after alloTX are frequent [1]. These complications include infections, neoplasia, and idiopathic and iatrogenic disorders [2–7], and are a major cause of morbidity and mortality in adult alloTX recipients [8–11]. Advances in antimicrobial prophylaxis, treatment of infections, and alloTX techniques, such as reduced-intensity conditioning, have decreased the risk of early post-transplant complications over the years.

Pulmonary complications represent a major cause of morbidity and mortality after allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT), developing in 40%-60% of recipients [1,2].

      2010, Respiratory Medicine
      Citation Excerpt :

Patients with haematological malignancies are at increased risk of potentially fatal infections as a consequence of treatment-induced neutropenia.1 Respiratory complications occur in up to 70% of allogeneic haematopoietic stem cell transplantation (SCT) patients, and are a leading cause of morbidity and mortality in this group of patients with mortality estimated at 38–92%.2–6 Prompt identification and treatment is critical to achieve a good outcome.
