Evaluation and Treatment of High-Risk Patients with Early-Stage Lung Cancer
2011, Clinics in Chest MedicineCitation Excerpt :With regard to the diagnosis of lung cancer, elderly patients obtain lower histologic confirmation rates and less accurate staging.135,136 However, several studies have shown that fiberoptic bronchoscopy and/or CT-guided needle biopsy commonly used for histologic diagnosis and staging of lung cancer are safe and very well tolerated by most patients irrespective of age, and should be routinely used to diagnose and stage elderly patients.137,138 Surgery is the treatment of choice for early-stage lung cancer provided that it can be performed with acceptable risk.
Computerised tomography guided transthoracic aspiration biopsy
2002, Medical Journal Armed Forces IndiaCitation Excerpt :The incidence of pneumothorax in this study was 21.9%, which is quite comparable to that reported by Brown as 25% [4]. The indication for transthoracic needle biopsy in patients with suspected chest malignancy is now well established [3]. The complications of haemoptysis and pneumothorax are well known.
