2013, Journal of PediatricsCitation Excerpt :Chest CT studies that have failed to show a preference for the upper lobes investigated young children aged <4 years undergoing bronchoscopy during a pulmonary exacerbation13 and slightly older children aged 6-10 years with a mean forced expiratory volume in 1 second (FEV1) of 102% predicted, undergoing CT while clinically stable.12 Chest CT studies that did find an upper lobe predominance included those of school-age children and adults considered clinically stable with no recent respiratory infection and mean FEV1 of 73% predicted,6 children aged 3-12 years while clinically stable with a mean FEV1 of 79% predicted,7 school-age children of 6-18 years from a newborn screened cohort,14 adults with mild disease and FEV1 > 75% predicted,9 and a combined population of younger and older children with a range of clinical scores and a mean FEV1 of 60% predicted.8 In general, most chest CT studies that have observed an upper lobe predominance involved older children and adults with more established disease.
