  • IL-33 blockade affects mediators of persistence and exacerbation in a model of chronic airway inflammation

2019, Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology
    Citation Excerpt :

This combination of mucus overproduction and decreased clearance in our model is also associated with mucus plugging and significant airflow limitation (decrease in FEV0.1). Hypersecretion of mucus by goblet cells and elimination or dysfunction of ciliated cells in the lung also represent the primary mechanisms of airway obstruction and a leading cause of death in patients with asthma and COPD.68-73 Transcriptomic analysis also revealed that markers of matrix remodeling and fibrotic responses are induced in response to HDM exposure, which correlates with the increased presence of myofibroblasts in the alveolar region of the lung and is associated with increased lung stiffness (as shown by increased respiratory system resistance and respiratory system elastance values).
