Lung Volume Reduction Surgery for Patients with Alpha-1 Antitrypsin Deficiency Emphysema
2009, Thoracic Surgery ClinicsCitation Excerpt :Of the 1218 patients randomized in the NETT trial, only 1.3% had severe A1AD.33 Eleven patients who had A1AD underwent LVRS in Cooper and colleagues' series (described previously) and five patients who had A1AD underwent LVRS in a series reported by Naunheim and associates at St. Louis University.29,34 Specific follow-up of the patients who had A1AD were not available in these series.
Lung volume reduction surgery for emphysema: What the radiologist needs to know
2006, Clinical RadiologyResults of unilateral lung volume reduction surgery in patients with distinct heterogeneity of emphysema between lungs
2005, Journal of Thoracic and Cardiovascular SurgeryCitation Excerpt :Unilateral LVR was performed intentionally in patients with distinct heterogeneity of emphysema between lungs identified and graded through a visual radiologic classification, whereas simultaneous bilateral LVR was preferred in patients with heterogeneous disease within each lung but symmetrically distributed between the lungs. Initial series on unilateral thoracoscopic LVR resulted in significant improvements in FEV1, RV, dyspnea indices, and SMWT for as long as 12 months.5-8 However, these early results were paralleled by those of McKenna and coworkers,11 who reported significantly greater improvements in measured spirometry and more frequent relief from oxygen dependence after bilateral LVR than after unilateral treatment.
