Predictive value of plasma biomarkers for mortality and organ failure development in patients with acute respiratory distress syndrome
2015, Journal of Critical CareCitation Excerpt :In this study, only the inflammatory pathway showed a predictive role in the development of MOF, although no association was found with mortality. Previous small studies have found no association of IL-8 and mortality [16–19]. However, others have found that IL-8 is an important predictor of mortality [7,20,21], including 2 large studies by Parsons et al [6] and Ware et al [22] in the setting of randomized controlled trials, where 781 and 528 patients were analyzed, respectively.
Pathophysiology of acute respiratory distress syndrome. Glucocorticoid receptor-mediated regulation of inflammation and response to prolonged glucocorticoid treatment
2011, Presse MedicaleCitation Excerpt :Patients failing to improve LIS in the first week of mechanical ventilation (unresolving ARDS) have, significantly higher levels of inflammatory cytokines at the onset of the disease (figure 1) [22,23]. Moreover, nonimprovers have persistent elevation over time in circulating and bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) levels of inflammatory cytokines (figure 1) [22–31] and chemokines [32], markers of ACM permeability [27,33,34] and fibrogenesis compared to improvers [35]. Patients with unresolving ARDS develop fever (systemic inflammatory response syndrome) in the absence of infection [29,36,37] and are also at increased risk for developing nosocomial infections (figure 2) [5,29].
