Clinical characteristics and outcome in muscular sarcoidosis: a retrospective cohort study and literature review
2022, Neuromuscular DisordersCitation Excerpt :Of these articles three (5%) consisted of case series focusing solely on findings on either muscle imaging or muscle biopsy results, two (3%) were reviews that did not describe new patients and 45 articles (74%) consisted of single case reports [14–16]. Fifteen articles described a total of 153 patients that met our inclusion criteria. [3,17–30]. A summary of the clinical features of these patients can be found in supplementary Tables 2 and 3.
Sarcoidosis and genetics
2011, Revue des Maladies RespiratoiresDendritic cells in muscle lesions of sarcoidosis
2011, Human PathologyCitation Excerpt :Immunohistochemical studies in muscular sarcoidosis revealed a variety of cell types were distributed in the lymphocyte layers such as CD8+ cells and B cells as well as CD4+ cells and macrophages [21]. In addition, cells that produce IL-18, a strong inducer of interferon-γ, were detected in such areas of muscular sarcoidosis [22]. DCs distributed in the lymphocyte layers could interact with these cells leading to efficient granuloma formation.
Pathogenesis of sarcoidosis
2011, Revue de Medecine InterneCirculating levels of both Th1 and Th2 chemokines are elevated in patients with sarcoidosis
2008, Respiratory MedicineCitation Excerpt :Previous studies have shown that a polarized T helper type 1 (Th1) response is involved in the granuloma formation, and Th1-associated cytokines, such as interferon (IFN)-γ and interleukin (IL)-2, play important roles in the pathogenesis of sarcoidosis.2–4 In addition, IL-12 and IL-18 synergistically induce increased production of IFN-γ primarily in the granulomatous tissue of sarcoidosis.5–7 Moreover, studies of intracellular cytokine expression in T cell clones from bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF) strongly support the notion that sarcoidosis is a Th1-mediated disease.8,9
The clinical significance of interleukin 18 assessment in sarcoidosis patients
2007, Respiratory MedicineCitation Excerpt :We found significantly elevated serum IL-18 level in the sarcoidosis patients compared to the control group. Plasma IL-18 levels in our sarcoidosis group (383 pg/ml) are similar to the results of other studies: 372.1 pg/ml in the Fukami's study,20 419.4 pg/ml in the Shigehara's study13 and 239 pg/ml in the Tanaka's investigation.14 Our findings concerning higher plasma IL-18 level in patients with multiorgan sarcoidosis are in concordance with the recent study of Fukami and co-workers.20
