AB  - Three cases of severe community acquired pneumonia requiring ventilatory support are presented. Continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) applied via a tightly fitting face mask was used and was successful in two cases; the third required intermittent positive pressure ventilation. More extensive use of CPAP in these circumstances should be considered.
