This adverse effect on cardiac function probably arises from repetitive apneas causing arterial oxyhemoglobin desaturation and excessive stimulation of the sympathetic nervous system [17,18]. Javaheri et al. [19] reported that moderate to severe SDB (RDI ≥15 events/h) was present in 51% (40% CSA and 11% OSA) of male patients with stable heart failure, and Oldenburg et al. [20] showed that it was present in 76% of patients (40% CSA and 36% OSA) with symptomatic chronic heart failure.

2006, Sleep Medicine ClinicsCitation Excerpt :Sleep-related respiration in older populations may differ than that in younger populations, however, and these differences may justify consideration of alternative indices to characterize SDB best in older populations. For example, underlying cardiovascular and neurologic disorders [22] or diabetes [23] in older individuals may increase the prevalence of Cheyne-Stokes breathing, which is associated with an increased frequency of central apnea. Quantification of central apnea by calculating a distinct central apnea index may facilitate identification of subgroups of the elderly with SDB whose disorder is substantively influenced by underlying medical problems, and whose primary breathing disturbances may have differing physiologic effects than individuals with predominantly obstructive events (ie, by high levels of obstructive apnea and hypopnea and few central events).
