The importance of neutrophils in combatting this pathogen is highlighted by the observation that patients with deficiencies in neutrophil function, or with reduced neutrophil numbers due to chemotherapy for cancer, are particularly susceptible to chronic and recurrent S. aureus infections [4,5]. In healthy individuals, neutrophils rapidly migrate out of the vasculature and are the first immune cell to arrive at the local nidus of infection.

Two hundred forty-one unrelated adults served as control subjects (Caucasians, 66.8% female, median age [range]: 35 [16–77] years).
