2011, PeptidesCitation Excerpt :Furthermore, PACAP and all of its three receptors are localized in epithelial, smooth muscle and inflammatory cells in the airways of several species [8,25,27,48,60]. PACAP causes relaxation of tracheal smooth muscle [4,9,66], promotes bronchodilation [35], and increases nasal resistance in rodents [29]. It is also a potent stimulator of airway mucus [36,62] and chloride secretion [12], suggesting its role in airway defense.
