2021, PlacentaCitation Excerpt :One such mechanism may be that of the placental enzyme, 11β-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase type 2 (HSD11B2), which buffers the level of cortisol that reaches the fetus by catalyzing a reaction that converts active cortisol to inert cortisone in the placenta [13]. In this way, HSD11B2 is hypothesized to be protective for the fetus by minimizing glucocorticoid exposure [14]. Recently, researchers have begun to utilize both animal and human models to investigate the relationship between maternal stress and various measures of HSD11B2, hypothesizing that maternal stress itself may up-regulate the enzyme as an adaptive, protective measure for the fetus or down-regulate the enzyme due to energetic or exhaustive limitations.

However, embryos exposed to excess glucocorticoids, especially in the early stages, can lead to FGR (Edwards et al., 1993). In mammals, cortisol (corticosterone, CORT) concentrations in the foetal blood are five to ten times lower than those in the mothers, while they are constantly increased in the maternal circulation during pregnancy (Chan et al., 2007; Chapman et al., 2013; Edwards et al., 1993).
