Allergen immunotherapy for allergic airway diseases: Use lessons from the past to design a brighter future
2022, Pharmacology and TherapeuticsWhich patients with asthma are most likely to benefit from allergen immunotherapy?
2022, Journal of Allergy and Clinical ImmunologyCitation Excerpt :In vitro, AIT induces the suppression of antigen-dependent production of eosinophil chemotactic activity from PBMCs and attenuates eosinophil transendothelial migration induced by antigen-stimulated mononuclear cells.109,110 In asthma due to birch allergy, AIT protects from the increase in eosinophils and ECP after allergen challenge21 and in ECP during the pollen season.111 In grass pollen immunotherapy, symptomatic improvement was correlated with reductions in eosinophil numbers and IL-5 mRNA expression in the nasal mucosa during the pollen season.112
Novel mechanisms in immune tolerance to allergens during natural allergen exposure and allergen-specific immunotherapy
2017, Current Opinion in ImmunologyCitation Excerpt :AIT regulates the thresholds for basophil and mast cell activation and decreases IgE-mediated histamine release [73,74]. Chemotactic factors for eosinophils and neutrophils and decreased plasma levels of eosinophil cationic protein (ECP) correlate with decreased bronchial hyperreactivity and clinical improvement in birch pollen AIT [71]. Mast cells and basophils require T cell cytokines for survival, priming and activity, which are not anymore provided by suppressed Th2 cells.
