For example, budesonide and fluticasone propionate were metabolised to 89% and 99% respectively for the swallowed part of the inhaled dose, while no metabolism was detected for the inhaled part, leading to the systemic bioactivity of both drugs being mainly determined by lung rather than gut bioavailability [77]. A potential advantage of inhaled drugs is the possibility to minimise systemic side effects by designing compounds with high systemic clearance combined with low oral bioavailability.
