| Peer review at Thorax |
Thorax peer reviews about 70% of the material it receives. In about 30% of the cases, this will consist of a review by an Editor or Associate Editor. The main reasons for rejection at this stage are lack of originality, serious scientific flaws or articles which do not fit within our Editorial Policy. The decision on these papers is usually taken within 14 days. The remaining articles are usually sent to at least two external reviewers. It is very helpful if you suggest a selection of reviewers (including their contact details plus email address). The choice of reviewers is at the discretion of the editors and they may or may not use the author suggested reviewers.
Reviewers and Associate Editors advise the Editor who is responsible for the final decision to accept or reject a manuscript. All papers recommended for acceptance are discussed at a weekly editorial meeting; all potentially acceptable papers are reviewed by a statistician.
The Editor can enter into correspondence about papers rejected as being unsuitable for publication, although the Editor's decision in these matters is final. The Editor retains the customary right to determine style and, if necessary, to shorten material accepted for publication.
