The HIV-positive TB individuals in South India were associated with the MBL2 B variant allele [13], whereas HIV-positive TB individuals with C variant allele were more prevalent than HIV-negative controls in Malawi [14]. TB in a Han Chinese population was not associated with MBL2 variants [15].

Previous studies on MBL variants and susceptibility to tuberculosis have shown a protective effect of MBL variants against tuberculosis within different populations (Hoal-Van Helden et al. 1999; Selvaraj et al. 1999; Soborg et al. 2003), although not invariably so (Fitness et al. 2004). However, a recent genome wide association study carried out on 2237 cases and 3122 controls from Ghana and Gambia testing for 354,607 autosomal SNPs, showed no evidence for association of SNPs within complement genes with host tuberculosis susceptibility (Thye et al. 2010).
