2013, International Journal of Biochemistry and Cell BiologyCitation Excerpt :Studies have shown that in response to oxidative stress in the lungs, GSH was rapidly consumed and decreased immediately following cigarette smoke exposure (Cotgreave et al., 1987; Ishizaki et al., 1996). When the exposure was stopped, the amount of GSH was gradually restored to normal levels (Cotgreave et al., 1987), and in some cases, the GSH levels exceeded baseline levels (Ishizaki et al., 1996). This finding may be caused by a compensatory mechanism in the organism that would produce additional GSH to respond to further increases in oxidative stress.
