The first study compares the effect of three modes of ventilation on cardiovascular and respiratory physiologic variables in 14 patients with acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). The modes of ventilation were:

  • conventional mechanical ventilation (CMV) using the ARDS Network Protocol

  • high frequency oscillation (HFO)

  • HFO combined with tracheal gas insufflation (TGI)
