Physiological and radiological characterisation of patients diagnosed with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease in primary care

Table 5

Lung function for patients with radiological evidence of emphysema or bronchiectasis

  • FEV1 = forced expiratory volume in one second; VC = vital capacity; RV = residual volume; TLC = total lung capacity; Tlco = carbon monoxide gas transfer factor; Kco= carbon monoxide gas tranfer coefficient (Tlcodivided by effective alveolar volume).

  • Data are percentage of the predicted value and are given as median with the interquartile range in parentheses.

  • 5-160 p<0.005,

  • 5-165 p<0.001 limited versus extensive emphysema (Mann Whitney U test).

  • 5-159 p<0.05 varicose/cystic versus tubular bronchiectasis.
